The Best Interior Design Styles, as Revealed by Google

most-popular-interior-design-stylesWhich are the most popular interior design styles?

As homeowners, we’re constantly on the lookout for the latest interior design styles to improve our house with. Whether it’s a new lick of paint or an entire renovation, we seek anything that can keep the home “Insta-worthy” and help it to sell in the future!

What are the different types of interior design styles?

There are hundreds of types and sub-types of décor styles, with the most popular being:

  • Contemporary
  • Modern
  • Scandinavian
  • Minimalist
  • Traditional
  • Shabby Chic
  • Vintage
  • Art Deco
  • Bohemian
  • Industrial

To name a few! However, these décor designs adapt year on year as trends develop and interests shift. So which is the best, or most popular?

SellHouseFast.uk sought to find out. Using SEMrush, the average monthly Google search volumes for over 60 styles* have been collated to reveal the most Googled interior design style!

According to our research, vintage home décor is most Googled of all interior design styles. In the UK, vintage décor remains a poignant trend, achieving a staggering 48,560 searches a month.

If you’re a fan of industrial-style décor, you’re not alone. This décor trend ranks in second place earning 38,710 searches a month, with many homeowners liking the rawness it adds to the interior space. Some of the more popular industrial revamp techniques include adding exposed brick walls and open metallic light fixtures.

In third place is contemporary décor, with a whopping 37,650 Google searches a month. Contemporary incorporates mostly designs and products of the present-day, so is one of the easier looks to perfect. The all-round favourite would shock if didn’t maintain its popularity.

In fourth, fifth and sixth place, we see nods to Scandinavian (33,660 searches), Rustic (31,900 searches) and Coastal (29,170) interior design styles.

At the bottom end of the table, in 20th place is Gothic style. This interior design style involves extravagant nods to medieval Europe with its ornate features. While it may seem unpopular to some, it still earns a respectable 7,420 searches a month.

Next in line is Mexican décor. Mexican home decoration design is Googled 8,140 times a month in the UK, which is surprising to some. Perhaps a South American influence on our home decorating is starting to become popular.

Following Gothic, the next searched for interior trends are:

  • Moroccan – 8,200
  • Tropical – 8,800
  • Bauhaus – 9,280
  • Shabby Chic – 9,360

Is Mid-Century Modern the interior design style on its way out?

Is Mid-Century Modern on its way out?

There has been lots of talk about the resurgence of the Mid-Century Modern interior design in recent years. The power of this trend influenced many people over the past two decades to incorporate accents into their homes, alongside a fresh mix of industrial and futuristic to their set-ups.

Despite this, the design (highly influenced by Bauhaus) only currently achieves 4,260 searches a month, placing it in 28th place. Perhaps it’s time to ask whether or not Mid-Century Modern may be on its way out?

European styles are on the rise

Another interesting development is the increase of searches for interior design styles originating in Europe. Greek décor receives 5,510 monthly searches, while Swedish (5,280), European (4,710), Georgian (4,480) and Mediterranean (4,080) all feature within the top 30 Googled interior design styles too. Will we be seeing more people incorporating these into their living spaces in the future?

Those with the lowest interest deserve a special mention

We looked into a total of 63 different styles in this study. Some results are surprising, some aren’t. But a special mention is deserved for those at the bottom end of the table.

Directoire, American Colonial and Post Modern place in 64th, 63rd and 62nd place respectively, earning just 310 searches a month combined.

Is there a reason for this? Are the trends too niche so as not to attract much online interest? Or are we just not a fan of they look? Whatever the case, SellHouseFast.uk recommends avoiding decorating in these styles – it could even reduce the value of your house!
